It was six-fifteen by the time Gail finished her last phone call of the day. She hurriedly tidied up her desk. Kay was due at her house in less than thirty minutes. She had called earlier from New York and they had confirmed arrangements to meet at Gail’s house.

Gail hoped there would be time for her to change. What had she been thinking when she dressed this morning? Her two employees had been eyeing her strangely all day. Maybe she was having a mild nervous breakdown. Isn’t that what people do when they’ve reached the end of their tether? RJ’s lawyer had called earlier, demanding a $2,500 retainer. They’d definitely have to take out a second mortgage on their home to cover the expenses—no doubt about it. If only Ralph would ask for a raise. Why was he so reluctant? There couldn’t be anyone in the company who worked harder than her husband. My God, he traveled three weeks out of the month.

Thoughts of Ralph made her hurry. She could picture him now, reading his newspaper and scowling at the clock, wondering where she was and why dinner wasn’t on the table.

“Let him wait,” the voice intoned.

What was wrong with her? She had never thought things like this before. She adored Ralph and at times still couldn’t believe that he was her husband. She saw the way other women looked at him whenever they were together. Ralph was an incredibly sexy man in a rumpled kind of way. He had a great smile and a wry sense of humor that always caught her off guard, making her laugh out loud. Aside from the fact that he traveled too much, was a terrible father, and often treated her like a maid, he was a great guy. At least that’s what she had always thought until now. So what had changed her perceptions?

Where were those darn shoes? She had kicked them off under the desk. How did Kay walk on those things? She groped blindly beneath the desk. The phone rang just as she felt the tip of a heel. She reached for the receiver.

“Where the hell are you?” Ralph exploded. “That friend of yours Kay is here. She said you’re going out to Mass over at the rectory. Who goes to Mass at night anyway?”

“Father Rich—” she tried to explain, slipping her feet into the shoes.

“—and what about dinner?”

From out of nowhere, anger ripped through her voice like a power surge. “What about it?”

“What did you say?”

“You’ve got two hands. Make something.”

She slammed down the receiver, thinking, Boy that felt good. So good, in fact, that she was completely unaware that she had put the Pradas on the wrong feet.

Kay sat on the kitchen stool watching a microcosm of American domesticity and felt a wave of gratitude that she had managed to stay unattached.

Ralph was making a pretense of searching for something for dinner. RJ wandered up and down the room, a cell phone pinned to his ear like an earring.
